Skip Guerguerat as a destination: it is a vehicle border post with no beds or food. Budget 2–3 h for the crossing, or 4–5 h to reach Dakhla.

Guerguerat is the only official crossing between Moroccan-administered Western Sahara and Mauritania, at the end of the N1 south of Dakhla. There is no town to visit: three Moroccan controls, a 3.3 km buffer zone with an unpaved sandy stretch, then Mauritanian passport, customs and visa counters. Travellers pass through in a few hours and sleep in Dakhla or Nouadhibou.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • North Africa ↗Plan links between North African countries by air or by ferry via Europe; the only regularly usable land borders for visitors are Tunisia–Algeria and Morocco–Mauritania via Western Sahara.
  • North Africa ↗Book Saharan nights (dunes, desert camps, oasis tours) between October and April; from May to September desert day temperatures regularly exceed 40 °C and many tours stop.
  • Western Sahara ↗In practice, entry is through Morocco and Moroccan entry rules apply; check them for your passport before booking.
  • Western Sahara ↗Stay on main roads west of the berm; the area around and east of it contains landmines and unexploded ordnance.
  • Western Sahara ↗Expect frequent police checkpoints on the coastal road; carry your passport and copies.

Entry rules depend on your passport. Full visa guide

Getting around

Road only, on the N1. Moroccan police enforce a complete standstill at stop signs, and speed checks are frequent on the Dakhla approach. Carry 20–40 completed fiche copies for the checkpoints ahead.

Watch out

Safety

The border area is manageable if you stay on the main road, stop fully at checkpoints and keep off unpaved ground where landmines may be present.
  • Landmine danger off the paved roads north of Nouadhibou: never leave the track, even without warning signs.
  • Strong winds and sandstorms cut visibility and raise fuel consumption.
  • Carry enough cash in euros or dirhams: ATMs at the border and in Nouadhibou are unreliable.
  • Mauritanian visa is paid in cash in euros or dirhams; the international Green Card is usually not valid, so local car insurance is bought at the border.
