Haizhu, Guangzhou: neighborhood guide

Haizhu is the district directly south of historic Guangzhou, on the far bank of the Pearl River. Locals call this side Henan, simply "south of the river". It is not the postcard Guangzhou of arcaded lanes; it is a working, residential and trading district that has grown fast since the 2010s, with real estate and wholesale trade as its engines.

The shape matters when you book. The northern edge along the river, around Canton Tower and Binjiang Road, is the part visitors use: towers, promenades, malls and easy metro hops to Yuexiu and Tianhe. The middle is campuses and old neighbourhoods, including Sun Yat-Sen University's main South Campus, which occupies the former Lingnan University site. The east, at Pazhou, is the exhibition zone. The south and southwest turn residential and industrial, with the wetland park as the one green draw.

Compared with Yuexiu and Liwan, Haizhu feels newer and more spread out. Compared with Tianhe, it is cheaper and quieter, at the cost of walking less and riding the metro more.

No, if your trip is about the old city on foot. The lanes, temples and markets that most first-timers come for sit in Yuexiu and Liwan, and Haizhu's blocks are long and car-oriented. Business travellers with meetings in Zhujiang New Town should stay in Tianhe instead of commuting across the river.

Haizhu is a residential district, so the food is everyday Cantonese rather than destination dining: congee and rice-noodle shops in the morning, roast meat and claypot rice at lunch, seafood and hotpot in the evening. The streets around Tongfu Middle Road and the older quarters near the river are the most rewarding to walk at mealtimes, and the malls by Canton Tower cover you when you want air conditioning and English menus.

The district has a small but established vegetarian scene. One long-running vegetarian restaurant sits on a side street off Tongfu Middle Road, near the Second Workers' Cultural Palace metro stop, and gets busy on the 1st and 15th of the lunar month. Hours and prices change; check before you go.

Canton Tower has its own stop on Line 3 and the APM; Pazhou and Xingangdong on Line 8 serve the exhibition complex; Sun Yat-Sen University has a Line 8 station.

The Haizhu Tram is a light-rail line along the river inside the district, running from Canton Tower east to Wanshenwei, where you can pick up Line 4 or Line 8. It is a slow, cheap way to link the waterfront sights rather than a fast cross-town option.

From Baiyun Airport, expect a metro ride with at least one change and roughly 60–75 minutes to a Haizhu hotel (check current lines and last-train times). Taxis and ride-hailing are straightforward but can crawl in rush hour on the river bridges. The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Mansion museum on Dongsha Street covers the revolutionary period and is free, closed Mondays. Sun Yat-Sen University's South Campus is a green, walkable break from the traffic, though access rules for visitors change; check before you turn up.

Haizhu National Wetland Park, in the south of the district, is the counterweight to all the concrete: boardwalks, orchards and birdlife. Entry is around ¥50 (2026 estimate), open 09:00–17:00 and closed Mondays. The Chen Liji Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine is a niche stop on Guangzhou Avenue South, free but booking-only and mostly group-oriented, with individual visits on Wednesdays and special open days. The Pearl River promenade itself costs nothing and is best at dusk.
