March is spring on the mainland and still winter at sea. Athens and Attica get mild, sunny spells with rain on roughly 8–10 days, highs near 16 °C and nights near 8 °C. Thessaloniki and the north run a few degrees cooler, with snow still on high ground in the mountains.
The Cyclades and Dodecanese are cool and windy, and the meltemi is not yet the issue — the problem is that the sea is about 15–16 °C, too cold for most swimmers. The Ionian and the west are the wettest zones. Crete is the mildest island option, with the south coast the best of it.
Daylight runs about 11.5–12.5 hours and clocks go forward on the last Sunday of the month, so evenings stretch out in the final week.

Crowds and prices
March is the last cheap month before Easter travel picks up. Crowd index 1/5 and price index 1/5: Athens museums, the Acropolis and Thessaloniki's centre are comfortable, and you can usually book hotels a few days ahead rather than weeks.
The trade-off is closures. On the islands, many hotels, tavernas and boat services are still shut or running a winter schedule, and ferry timetables are thinner than in summer. If your plan depends on a specific island, check sailings and open accommodation before booking flights (check).
Domestic flights and ferries are also cheaper now than in April, when Orthodox Easter (12 April 2026, 2 May 2027) fills ferries and rooms.

Where to go in March
Base the trip on the mainland. Athens works well: the Acropolis and the big museums without queues, plus day trips to Cape Sounion, Aegina, Hydra, Poros and Spetses, which stay reachable by ferry from Piraeus. Thessaloniki and the north suit a city-and-mountains trip, with Meteora and the Zagori villages still cold but quiet.
Crete is the best island compromise: Heraklion, Chania and the south coast are milder, and some coastal businesses stay open year-round. Nafplio and the Peloponnese are good for walking and archaeological sites before the spring crowds.
Skip Santorini and Mykonos unless you specifically want the off-season version: caldera views with few people, but limited hotels, restaurants and boat trips.

What to pack
Pack for two seasons in one day: a light waterproof shell, a warm mid-layer for evenings and windy sites, comfortable walking shoes for wet stone and marble, and sunglasses for the bright spells. Add a scarf or hat for parades and for the north, where mornings can still be close to freezing in the mountains.

April is the upgrade: wildflowers, good walking, islands reopening, and Orthodox Easter filling ferries and rooms — book early if your dates fall on it. May is warmer, greener and fully open, with the sea cool but swimmable late in the month.
