Greece in April: what to expect

April is a transition month. Winter rain eases, days lengthen and the mainland turns green, but the Aegean is still warming up. Expect mild, often sunny afternoons in Athens, Crete and the Peloponnese, and noticeably cooler, wetter conditions in the Ionian islands and the north around Thessaloniki, Meteora and Zagori.

The sea lags the air by roughly two months. Water around the Cyclades and Crete sits near 16–18 °C, which suits a quick swim for hardy swimmers but not long beach days. Mountain areas keep snow on high ground into spring, and some passes and trails stay closed.

Early April is still shoulder season: hotels in Athens and Crete are open at moderate rates, and archaeological sites are comfortable. From the week before Orthodox Easter the picture changes — domestic travel peaks, ferries fill, and island rooms that were cheap in March jump for a few days.

Island infrastructure is only partly open. On the Cyclades and Dodecanese, some hotels, tavernas and boat services restart through the month, so check that your specific island is running before you commit. Crete, Corfu and Rhodes are safer bets for a full range of services.

The month's anchor is Orthodox Easter, which falls on 12 April in 2026 and 2 May in 2027. Expect midnight church services with candlelight, fireworks in many towns, and family feasts on Sunday. Athens, Crete and the islands all mark it, and transport books out days ahead.

Independence Day on 25 March falls just before April but its parades and the start of the tourist season set the tone. In late April, Greek towns begin their summer festival calendars with local saints' days, food fairs and the reopening of seasonal tavernas.

Athens is at its best: comfortable temperatures for the Acropolis and museums, and terraces filling up. The Peloponnese suits road trips and archaeological sites such as Mycenae, Epidaurus and Nafplio, with wildflowers along the way. Crete offers the warmest island weather and the longest season, so it works for both walking and early beach time.

For islands, pick the bigger, better-connected ones — Crete, Rhodes, Corfu — where services are reliably open. The Cyclades are possible but patchy: Mykonos and Naxos are waking up, with some businesses still shut. Thessaloniki and northern Greece are good for city breaks and food, though cooler and wetter than the south.

Pack for two seasons in one trip. Days can feel like early summer in Athens and Crete, while evenings, the north and the islands stay cool. Layers, a light waterproof and comfortable walking shoes cover most of it. Add a warm layer for Easter services, which often run late into the night outdoors.

If you plan to swim, bring a rash vest or quick-dry layer — the water is bracing. Sunscreen matters even on cloudy days, and a power adapter for Greece's Type C/F sockets is worth checking before you leave.

March is quieter and cheaper but wetter and cooler, with islands still largely closed. May is the sweet spot: warmer, greener, more open, with the sea becoming swimmable late in the month. June brings long days and full ferry timetables, but also the first heat and higher prices.
