Goondiwindi
Stop one night on the Newell or Leichhardt Highway, not a destination: the river walk, the museum and a pub meal fill an afternoon.
Goondiwindi sits on the Macintyre River right on the Queensland–New South Wales border, on the Newell Highway between Moree and Toowoomba and the Leichhardt Highway north-west towards Miles. It is a working rural town of about 6,400 people, and almost everyone who sleeps here is breaking a long drive between Brisbane, Toowoomba, Moree and Dubbo. One night covers the river, the Customs House Museum and a counter meal; two nights only if you fish or birdwatch.

- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
- Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
- Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
- Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Marshall Street (main street)
Pubs with rooms, cafés and the museum within a few minutes' walk; best if you arrive without a car.
Highway motels (Cunningham and Old Cunningham Highway)
Drive-up rooms with parking at the door; pick these for a one-night stop with a trailer or a loaded car.
Caravan parks
Cabins and powered sites; the quietest option and best for early birdwatching. Confirm whether the park is riverside before booking.

Safety
- Highway traffic and road trains through town; cross at the marked lights, not mid-block.
- Summer heat: plan the river walk before 10:00 or after 16:00 and carry water.Summer heat: plan the river walk before 10:00 AM or after 4:00 PM and carry water.
- Border-checkpoint queues have caused long delays here in past years when Queensland or New South Wales restricted movement: check current rules before you drive.
- Book ahead in harvest season and around race meetings; motel beds in a town this size sell out.
- Long empty stretches between towns: fuel up here before heading west or south.
