Gilbert is the largest incorporated town in the United States, a former hay and railroad town south of Mesa that is now a suburban centre of about 200,000 people. Almost everything worth doing sits in two clusters: the walkable Heritage District downtown and the parks and shopping along the Loop 202. You need a car, and one full day covers the town.

Getting around

A car is the practical way to move around Gilbert: the town is spread over roughly 15 km and buses are sparse. Valley Metro runs regional buses and light rail in the wider Phoenix area, but not into most of Gilbert. Rideshare works for downtown evenings; walking covers only the Heritage District.

Safety

Gilbert is a low-crime suburban town and safe for tourists day and night. The real risks are summer heat, long unlit walks between parks, and drinking in the Heritage District without a plan to get back.
  • Summer heat is the real hazard: June to September often tops 40°C, so walk before 09:00 or after 18:00 and carry water.
  • Downtown Gilbert parking fills on weekend evenings; use the free lots off Gilbert Road and walk.
  • Some bars in the Heritage District have a password or cover policy: check before you queue.
  • Distances between parks and downtown are longer than they look on a map: plan 15–20 min drives.
