How to choose, step by step

Start with your route, not with a hotel. If you fly into Accra and out of Accra, book the first two nights near the airport and the last night there too, so the airport run is short. If you are heading to Cape Coast by road, one night in Accra is enough before you leave.

In Accra, the practical split is Airport Residential and Cantonments for quiet, security and proximity to the airport; Osu and Labone for restaurants, bars and walkable evenings. East Legon is popular with longer stays and has good cafés, but you will rely on taxis or ride-hailing for everything.

On the coast, stay in Cape Coast town if you want to walk to the castle and eat locally. Elmina is quieter and closer to Elmina Castle and the Dutch Cemetery area. Beach resorts between the two towns suit travellers with a car or driver.

In the north, Tamale is the transport base for Mole National Park, with the park itself about a four-hour drive away; some travellers stay at the park instead. Kumasi works as a two-night stop between Accra and the north, with hotels clustered around Adum and the ring road.

Then check the boring things that decide whether a stay is comfortable: a generator, a water tank, air conditioning that actually runs at night, and whether the rate includes breakfast. Ask about the road to the hotel if you arrive after dark — some smaller properties sit on unlit tracks.

Notes and traps

Prices quoted in US dollars at city hotels are often converted at a worse rate than paying in cedis. Ask which currency the bill is in before you check in.

Book directly with small guesthouses by phone or WhatsApp where possible; some have no working online booking and a deposit by mobile money is normal.

December is busy. If you want a specific beach lodge or a hotel near the airport over Christmas, book two to three months out. In the rainy season you can often decide a day or two ahead.

Air conditioning, hot water and Wi-Fi quality vary more than the star rating suggests. Recent guest reviews are a better guide than the number of stars.
