Ghana is not a cheap country by regional standards. Accra is one of the pricier cities in the region: imported food, imported drinks and hotel rooms cost more than most first-time visitors expect. The way to keep a trip affordable is to move the way residents move, eat where residents eat, and put your money into the things you actually came for — the Cape Coast and Elmina castles, Kakum, Mole — rather than into transport and beds.
Start with the bed. A hostel dorm or simple guesthouse runs about US$12–25 a night; a mid-range hotel with AC and a generator is US$45–90; top Accra hotels start around US$150. Outside Accra, in Cape Coast, Kumasi, Tamale and the Volta Basin, the same money usually buys more room — check current rates — so a night or two in the capital and the rest of the trip upcountry is the standard budget pattern.
Food is where Ghana is genuinely good value. A plate of waakye, jollof or banku with stew at a chop bar is GH₵30–60 (US$3–6), and two of those a day plus fruit and water keeps food near US$8–12. A local beer (Club, Star) in a bar is GH₵20–35. Restaurant meals in Accra and hotel breakfasts are what push food to US$20–35 a day at mid-range.
Transport is the swing factor. Tro-tros and shared taxis are the cheapest way to move; intercity coaches (Accra–Kumasi, Accra–Cape Coast) are cheaper than flying or hiring a car — check current fares. Uber across central Accra is US$3–8, which is often worth it at night. A private car and driver for a day adds US$80–130 — useful for Kakum, Elmina and Mole, but the single biggest line item you can cut if you are willing to use coaches and local transport instead.
Sights at foreigner rates add up: Cape Coast Castle and Kakum canopy walk are each roughly US$10–15, and Mole walking safaris about US$10–20 plus park entry. Budget US$4–10 a day at backpacker level and US$10–20 at mid-range, more if you are doing several paid sites in one day.
Cash is the practical constraint. The currency is the Ghanaian cedi (GHS, GH₵). Cards work in larger hotels, malls and some Accra restaurants, but most other payments are cash, and change is often short — carry small notes. Mobile money is widely used by residents; most visitors still pay cash. Use ATMs inside banks or malls, and change money only at banks or licensed bureaus.

Book the first night in Accra and then decide: the capital is the most expensive place you will sleep, and it is easy to spend three nights there by default.
