Where to stay in Georgia: best areas and types of hotel

Georgia is small enough that you pick one base per region rather than one base for the whole country. Tbilisi covers the capital, day trips and food; Batumi covers the coast; Kazbegi, Mestia and Telavi cover mountains and wine. Most first trips run Tbilisi 3–4 nights, then one or two regional stops.

Within Tbilisi the choice is really Old Town versus the newer districts. Old Town (Abanotubani, Sololaki) puts the baths, Narikala and most restaurants within a 15-minute walk, at the cost of noise, stairs and higher prices. Vake, Saburtalo and Vera are 10–20 minutes by metro or taxi from the centre, with larger rooms, supermarkets and quieter nights. Chugureti and Marjanishvili sit between the two: cheaper than Old Town, still walkable to the centre.

Georgian lari (₾) prices vary sharply by season and city. Tbilisi and Batumi in July–August cost roughly double their November rates; mountain guesthouses are cheap but scarce in peak weeks. The bands below are 2026 estimates for a double room with a private bathroom, booked directly or through a platform.

Guesthouses and family-run stays are the standard in Kazbegi, Mestia and Kakheti villages: simple rooms, shared or private bathroom, breakfast often included. In Tbilisi and Batumi, apartment rentals compete with hotels and can be better value for stays over four nights, but confirm heating, hot water and lift access before you book, especially for winter.

Book 2–3 months ahead for June–September on the coast, for New Year in Tbilisi, and for Svaneti and Kazbegi in July–August, when the good guesthouses sell out. Outside those windows a few days' notice is usually enough, and in Tbilisi you can often walk in and negotiate. Orthodox Easter, the New Year period and long public holidays fill domestic stays first.

Two practical checks before paying: whether the room has heating (winters in Tbilisi are cold, and mountain villages colder) and whether the property is on a street a taxi can reach. Old Town addresses often sit behind staircases and pedestrian lanes, which is fine on foot and awkward with luggage.

Most hotels in Tbilisi, Batumi and Kutaisi take cards; guesthouses in villages often want cash in lari, so carry enough for the stay and for the marshrutka back. Tipping is not expected in guesthouses, and restaurants frequently add a service charge. Mobile data is cheap and coverage is good in towns, weaker in high valleys, so download offline maps before mountain legs.

Distances decide your base more than price. Kazbegi is about 3 hours by road from Tbilisi, Mestia 8–10 hours or a short flight, Batumi 5–6 hours by train. Staying one night in a far region usually costs more in travel time than it saves in room rate. If you are combining regions, keep Tbilisi as the first and last base and book the regional nights around fixed transport.
