Geneva on a budget: cheap food, stays and free sights

Geneva is one of the two most expensive cities in Switzerland, alongside Zurich, so the budget question is really about where you sleep and how often you sit down in a restaurant. A dorm bed plus supermarket food and a free transport card keeps a day near CHF 105–175. Add a 3★ hotel room and one restaurant dinner and the same day costs CHF 245–420.

The single biggest saving is the Geneva Transport Card: accommodation providers give it to registered guests, and it covers trams, buses and the lake boats within the city zone for the length of your stay. Ask at check-in rather than buying a pass. The second saving is eating the way locals do at lunch: supermarket counters, market stalls and picnic food by the lake.

These are the choices that move the daily number most. Prices are 2026 estimates; confirm opening hours on the day, as Geneva's small food places keep short hours and close on Sundays.

Use the country-level costs as your baseline and expect Geneva to sit at the top of the range. A café crème is CHF 4.50–6, a supermarket sandwich CHF 5–8, a restaurant main CHF 25–45 and a bar beer CHF 7–9. Fondue runs CHF 28–38 per person in a restaurant, which is why the Bains des Pâquis version, eaten outdoors, is the budget option.

Two structural savings matter more than any single price. First, lunch: many Geneva restaurants charge less at midday for the same kitchen, and supermarket canteens are cheapest of all. Second, water: tap water is safe to drink in Switzerland, so carry a bottle instead of buying drinks at CHF 4–5 each.

Geneva Airport is about 6 km from the centre, and the train to Geneva Cornavin station takes around 7 minutes. If you are flying in from the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or Ireland, most routings land in the morning, which lets you drop bags and eat a supermarket lunch before the afternoon. Check the flight times for your own departure city, as long-haul arrivals into Geneva are concentrated in the morning and early afternoon.

From the airport, a free ticket machine in the baggage hall issues a 80-minute transport ticket for the city zone, so you can reach your accommodation without paying. Once checked in, the Geneva Transport Card from your host covers the rest of your stay. Trains from Zurich, Bern and Lausanne arrive at Cornavin, which is walkable to the lake and the Old Town.
