Before you start
Welcome to the Lake quays and Jet d'Eau audio walk in Geneva. 3 stops: Bains des Pâquis, Jet d'Eau and Flower Clock (Jardin Anglais). Afternoon-and-evening cluster: the lakeside promenade from Jardin Anglais to the Jet d'Eau and the Bains des Pâquis pier; flat, breezy, exposed.
Jardin Anglais, the Mont-Blanc bridge and the quays out to the Jet d'Eau and Bains des Pâquis (approximate box). Underfoot: paved promenade; slope: flat; shade: low.
Geneva is a small city with an outsized role: a Roman frontier town, a Protestant capital, the birthplace of the Red Cross, a home for the League of Nations and the UN, and today one of the most expensive places to visit in Europe.
Before you start: Do not walk out on the jetty in strong wind or ice. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.
1. Bains des Pâquis
Look for
- The pier and the lake view
- The buvette
Stop 1 of 3: Bains des Pâquis. Arrival point: Walk out along the pier from the Quai du Mont-Blanc side.
A public lake pier with a swim in summer, a sauna and a buvette; small entry fee; go in the afternoon or at sunset.
Look for The pier and the lake view: Mont Blanc on a clear day. Look for The buvette: Cheap snacks and drinks; winter fondue is a local habit (check the season).
On the north shore, the Bains des Pâquis is a public bathing area with a pier, a sauna, a buvette and, in winter, cheese fondue on the pier. Highs reach 25–28 °C, the light lasts until after 21:00 and the Bains des Pâquis, the quays and terraces are full.
Swim only in the marked areas; follow the lifeguard flags. Full on hot summer weekends; quiet in winter. Bring a towel in summer; swim in the marked area.
Walk:Next, stop 2: Jet d'Eau. It's about 6 minutes on foot. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
2. Jet d'Eau
Look for
- The fountain from the jetty
- The lake path
Stop 2 of 3: Jet d'Eau. Arrival point: Walk along the Quai Gustave-Ador from Jardin Anglais.
Walk the lake path to the fountain and the end of the jetty; it does not run in strong wind or hard frost, so glance at it from the quay first.
Look for The fountain from the jetty: The jet reaches well over 100 m; you feel the spray on a windy day. Look for The lake path: Flat promenade with benches all the way from Jardin Anglais.
Keep back from the jetty edge when spray blows; the stone gets slick. Busiest on summer evenings and weekends. Look from the quay first; if the fountain is off, skip the walk to the jetty. Go at sunset for the light on the water. Shoes on.
Walk:Next, stop 3: Flower Clock (Jardin Anglais). It's about 18 minutes on foot. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
3. Flower Clock (Jardin Anglais)
L’horloge fleurie
Look for
- The planted clock
Stop 3 of 3: Flower Clock (Jardin Anglais). Locally, L’horloge fleurie. Arrival point: Walk from the Mont-Blanc bridge; the clock is in Jardin Anglais on the lake shore.
A five-minute photo stop at the start of the lake promenade: the clock is planted with thousands of flowers and changes with the season; walk on to the Jet d’Eau.
Look for The planted clock: A working clock face set in flower beds, redesigned each year.
From Jardin Anglais and its Flower Clock, the path runs along the lake to the jetty, with cafés, benches and swimming ledges. Spring brings flowers to the parks and the replanted Flower Clock, cool days and occasional rain.
Do not step on the flower beds. Tour groups mid-morning in summer; quiet in the evening. Stay off the beds; keep to the paths. Combine it with the promenade to the Jet d’Eau. Go in the morning for the best light on the flowers.
End of the walk
That's the end of the Lake quays and Jet d'Eau walk. To carry on, Old Town (Vieille Ville) is about 14 minutes away (walk). To carry on, Cornavin and Pâquis is about 15 minutes away (walk).
