Welcome to the Marpi and the north-east war sites audio walk in Garapan (Saipan). 3 stops: Banzai Cliff, Last Command Post and Bird Island Lookout. A car-loop cluster at the north end: Banzai Cliff, the Last Command Post and Bird Island Lookout; go in the morning, take water and fuel, and plan 3–4 hours including the drive.

Garapan is a small resort town on the west coast of Saipan, and it sits on one of the most heavily fought-over pieces of ground in the Pacific.
Before you start: Stay on paths: unexploded ordnance is still found in the jungle. Few services in the north: fill the tank and take water. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.
1. Banzai Cliff

Stop 1 of 3: Banzai Cliff. Locally, Banzai Cliff (Marpi).
A memorial cliff at the north tip of the island, 30 minutes by car from Garapan: go in the morning with a driver, stay quiet, dress covered, and treat it as a war memorial and not a photo stop.
Look for Memorial cliff and monuments: Peace memorials from Japan, Korea and the United States stand near the edge. Look for View north: The reef and open Pacific from the cliff top.
The Marpi memorials in the north, including Banzai Cliff, mark where many people died at the end of the battle. A sensible order is to start at American Memorial Park for the outline, drive north the next morning to Banzai Cliff and the Last Command Post, and leave the afternoon free. Tours are the easy option for the north: a van tour of Banzai Cliff, the Last Command Post and the lookouts takes about four hours, and a guide gives context.
Stay behind the barriers: the cliff edge is sheer and the ground can be wet. Tour buses mid-morning; earliest and latest hours are quieter. Covered shoulders and knees; no swimwear.
Walk:Next, stop 2: Last Command Post. This leg is usually a ride, not a walk: taxi or hired car, about 6 minutes. The next stop is about 500 metres to the south-west. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
2. Last Command Post

Stop 2 of 3: Last Command Post. Locally, Last Command Post (Marpi).
A ruined Japanese command bunker in the Marpi hills with guns and pillboxes nearby: stop on the Banzai Cliff loop, stay on the path, and go in daylight.
Look for Japanese command bunker ruin: Damaged concrete with shell and gun marks. Look for Guns and pillboxes: Weapons left on site near the path.
Scattered ruins, guns and pillboxes, such as the Last Command Post, show how the defence was organised.
Stay on paths: unexploded ordnance is still found in the jungle. Light, mostly tour groups mid-morning. Covered shoulders and knees are respectful; closed shoes for uneven ground. Do not enter unstable structures. Do it with Banzai Cliff on the same car loop. Read the on-site signs before you walk the path. Is it worth a stop? Yes if you are already driving the north for Banzai Cliff; it is a short stop and adds context.
Walk:Next, stop 3: Bird Island Lookout. This leg is usually a ride, not a walk: taxi or hired car, about 5 minutes. The next stop is about 300 metres to the south-east. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
3. Bird Island Lookout

Stop 3 of 3: Bird Island Lookout. Locally, Bird Island Lookout (Marpi).
A short roadside lookout over a small rocky islet and the north-east coast: a five-minute stop on the Marpi loop, best in clear morning light; do not try to reach the water below.
Look for Islet and reef view: Rocky islet with breaking surf and a wide Pacific horizon.
Stay behind the barriers: the drop is sheer. Tour buses mid-morning; otherwise quiet. Stay behind rails; take rubbish with you. Do not climb down to the shore. Do it after Banzai Cliff on the same loop. Check the sea before you go: spray and mist reduce the view. Is it worth a stop? Yes if you are already on the north loop; it is a short view stop and not a destination alone. Can I get down to the water? No: the drop is steep and unsafe. Closed shoes; steps can be wet.
