Galway airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Galway's own airfield has no scheduled commercial service, so the trip starts at Shannon or Dublin. Both end the same way: a bus, a train or a taxi into the city centre.

The train is the comfortable choice from Dublin; the express bus is cheaper and drops closer to Eyre Square. From Shannon, the bus is the default and a taxi is the only fast option late at night.

Two workable patterns. The express bus leaves from the airport forecourt and runs to Galway coach station beside Eyre Square, usually with Wi-Fi and no change; Citylink and GoBus both run it. This is the simplest option with luggage.

The train is faster on the rail leg but needs a link first: take a city bus or taxi to Heuston station (about 30–45 min), then Irish Rail to Galway in 2 h 20. Book online in advance for the €15–45 band; walk-up fares are higher and popular services sell out.

Shannon is the closer gateway for Clare and Galway. Bus Éireann and private coaches connect it to Galway in roughly 1 h 30, but not every service is direct: some routes change in Ennis or Limerick, which adds time and a wait.

A taxi covers the 85–90 km in about 1 h 15–1 h 30 and costs roughly €120–150 (2026 estimate). It is the only sensible choice for a late arrival or a group of three or four splitting the fare.

Budget €15–25 per person for the Dublin express bus, €20–50 for the bus-plus-train combination, and €10–20 for the Shannon bus. A taxi from Shannon is the one big-ticket item at roughly €120–150; from Dublin Airport it is far more and rarely worth it.

Once in Galway, the city is walkable. Local buses take a Leap card or cash, and contactless payment has been rolling out on Irish transport — check what the driver accepts before boarding.

Landing late is the main planning risk. Shannon's last bus to Galway can leave before a delayed evening flight clears baggage, so have a taxi number or a hotel near the airport as a fallback. Dublin has more late services, but the train stops running well before midnight.

If Galway is your base for Connemara, the Aran Islands or the Burren, a hire car collected at Shannon or Dublin is often cheaper than day tours for two or more people. Otherwise stay car-free in Galway and book tours from the city.
