The Free State is South Africa's breadbasket: maize and beef farms, sandstone hills in the east, and the Vredefort Dome west of the N1. It sits between Johannesburg and Cape Town on the N1, so most travellers cross it rather than stop. Stop for two nights if you want Clarens and Golden Gate, or one night in Bloemfontein for the museums. A car is the only practical way to move between towns.

Free State highveld: Summer rain falls as brief afternoon thunderstorms; winters are cold and dry with severe frost in Bloemfontein. The east (Harrismith, Bethlehem, Ficksburg) gets snow on the higher ranges.
