FitzgeraldFitzgerald, Georgia

Give Fitzgerald one night, or a half-day stop off I-75: the Blue & Gray Museum and the downtown junglefowl take about 3 hours.

Fitzgerald is a small south-Georgia town founded in 1895 for Union Civil War veterans, which is why Union generals line the east–west streets and Confederates the north–south ones. The draw is that odd history, one good museum in a former rail depot, and free-roaming red junglefowl downtown. It is a half-day stop or an overnight between Macon and Valdosta, not a destination on its own.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical way in and around: Fitzgerald sits off I-75 at US-129 and GA-107, about 1 h 30 min south of Macon and roughly 3 h from Atlanta. Downtown is small enough to walk once parked, and the junglefowl wander the streets on their own.

Watch out

Safety

Fitzgerald is a quiet small town and normal precautions apply: lock the car, keep to lit streets after dark, and watch for the junglefowl when driving downtown.
  • Summer heat and humidity: plan museum and indoor stops for midday.
  • Small-town hours: several downtown businesses close early or on Sundays — check before you drive in.
  • The Wild Chicken Festival fills downtown on its March weekend; book a room ahead if you want that date.
