Fiji on a budget: daily costs and money-saving tips
A budget trip to Fiji costs about FJ$105–320 (roughly US$50–150) per person per day: dorm or backpacker island bed, meals, local buses and one boat leg spread over the stay. Stay on Viti Levu or a Yasawa backpacker resort, eat where locals eat, and book boat transfers as part of a package. Costs rise fast if you add a compulsory island meal plan or move to a mid-range resort.

Details
Fiji's cost problem is geography, not price level. Food, buses and beds on Viti Levu are cheap by Pacific standards. The money goes on getting to an island and staying fed once you are there: catamaran transfers run FJ$100–200 one way from Denarau to a Mamanuca resort, and many island resorts make a meal plan compulsory at FJ$90–250 a day.
The cheapest workable plan is to base yourself on Viti Levu — Nadi, Lautoka or the Coral Coast — and take day trips rather than sleeping on an island. Buses are the main saving: the Nadi–Suva express is FJ$20–30, and local buses around Nadi and Lautoka cost a few dollars. Food from markets, curry and roti cafés (FJ$10–18) and shops rather than resort restaurants keeps the food line near FJ$30–70 a day.
If you want the island experience, a Yasawa backpacker resort with a compulsory meal plan is usually the cheapest way to get it. Book the boat transfer as part of a package rather than separately, and stay several nights so the transfer cost spreads out. Two-tank dives at FJ$300–450 are the single biggest optional expense; snorkelling from the beach is free.
Watch the tax line. Resorts quote rates that may exclude 15% VAT and a service tax, so a FJ$200 room can bill higher. Ask before booking whether the rate is tax-inclusive. Tipping is not expected; many resorts run a staff Christmas fund instead.

Tips
- Sleep on Viti Levu and day-trip to islands instead of paying island resort rates.
- Buy a Yasawa or Mamanuca package that bundles the boat transfer, not a separate ticket.
- Eat curry and roti, market fruit and shop snacks; resort meals are where budgets break.
- Take the express bus Nadi–Suva (FJ$20–30) rather than a taxi or domestic flight.
- Withdraw FJD in Nadi or Lautoka — outer islands have no ATMs.
- Travel November–April for lower rates, accepting heat, humidity and rain.
- Ask whether the quoted room rate includes 15% VAT and the service tax.
- Snorkel from the beach instead of paying FJ$300–450 for a two-tank dive.
