Where to stay in Fiji: best areas and types of hotel

Where you stay in Fiji is really a choice between three patterns: a night near the airport, an island resort reached by boat, or a road-access resort on Viti Levu. Most first trips work best as one night in Nadi or Denarau, then a single island base for 4–6 nights. Splitting between two island groups costs you a half-day of transfers each time.

Fiji spans backpacker dorms to private-island resorts, and the gap is wide. Prices below are 2026 estimates in Fijian dollars; resort quotes often exclude tax, service charge, meals and boat transfers, so compare the final nightly figure, not the headline rate.

On the islands, a meal plan is common and sometimes compulsory. Transfers by catamaran or resort boat are charged per person each way and can add a meaningful amount to a short stay — a reason to stay longer once you have paid to get there.

Nadi and Denarau suit a first or last night. You are minutes from the airport, Port Denarau is where island boats leave, and there is a market and temple to fill a spare morning. It is not a beach destination.

The Mamanuca islands are the closest island resorts to Nadi and the easiest introduction: short boat rides, calm water, snorkelling and family-friendly resorts. The Yasawa islands run further north-west, with longer transfers but more beaches, the Sawa-i-Lau caves and village stays, including backpacker resorts.

The Coral Coast is the road-access option on Viti Levu — you can drive there, which suits travellers who dislike boats or want to keep moving. Pacific Harbour and Beqa add shark diving and rafting. Taveuni and Savusavu on Vanua Levu are for divers and rainforest, reached by domestic flight. Suva is a working capital rather than a resort town; one night covers the museum and market. Levuka on Ovalau is the old colonial capital, small and quiet.

May to October is the dry season and the busiest window; December and January fill up again with holiday travel from Australia and New Zealand. For those periods, book island resorts two to four months ahead and four to six months ahead for Christmas and New Year. Outside peak dates, a few weeks is often enough, and Nadi airport hotels rarely sell out.

If your dates are flexible, the shoulder weeks around May and October give similar weather with more availability. Check the best time to visit Fiji before you fix dates.

Island resorts are usually reached only by boat or small plane, so arrival-day timing matters: a late international landing may mean a night near Nadi before the morning catamaran. Weather can delay boats and domestic flights in the wet season, so keep a buffer before your flight home.

Bring reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent and any medication you need; small islands have limited shops. Power is 240 V with Australian-style Type I plugs, so US and UK travellers need an adapter. Tipping is not expected; many resorts run a staff fund instead. Check your travel insurance covers boat transfers and any diving you plan to do.
