Exeter
Exeter, California
One night is enough for Exeter itself; sleep here only if you want a small-town base 30–40 min from Sequoia's foothills and Lake Kaweah.
Exeter is a small San Joaquin Valley town of about 1,850 people, 22 km east of Highway 99 on the road toward Sequoia National Park. Its draw is a compact, walkable downtown of murals and a handful of places to eat, plus quick access to Lake Kaweah and the park's foothills. Most travellers pass through in an afternoon or use it as a cheap bed before or after Sequoia.

- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics

Scams and watch-outs

- Sequoia park roads close in snow; check conditions before you set out.
- Small-town hours: many kitchens close by 20:00–21:00.
Exeter is a quiet small town and feels safe by day; the real risks are summer heat, winter tule fog on the highways and wildlife if you hike the foothills. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight.
