How to get to Estonia: airports, flights and border crossings

Estonia sits inside the Schengen area, so the paperwork depends on your passport, not on the airport you pick. Summer (June–August) is the busiest and priciest window; late spring and September give the same light with cheaper seats. Fares below are 2026 estimates for a return trip booked a few months ahead.

Step 1: pick the airport. Tallinn Airport (TLL) is the only airport with a wide route map inside Estonia. It handles direct flights from Helsinki, Stockholm, Riga, Warsaw, London and a growing list of other European cities, plus seasonal charters. Tartu Airport (TAY) exists but has very few scheduled routes, so treat it as a bonus, not a plan.

Step 2: compare the alternatives. Riga (RIX) in Latvia often has cheaper long-haul fares and sits about 4–4.5 hours from Tallinn by bus. Helsinki (HEL) has the widest long-haul network in the region; from there you take a ferry (about 2–3.5 hours) or a short flight. Vilnius (VNO) is the longest overland option, roughly 8–9 hours by bus. Add the transfer cost and time before you decide the cheap fare is actually cheap.

Step 3: book the onward leg. Buses between Riga and Tallinn run through the day and are the standard way to link the two capitals. Ferries between Helsinki and Tallinn run several times daily and take foot passengers. Trains inside Estonia connect Tallinn with Tartu, Narva, Pärnu and Valga; international rail links are limited, so most travellers arrive by air, bus or ferry.

Step 4: get from the airport to your bed. Tallinn Airport is close to the city: a tram and a city bus run to the centre in about 15–20 minutes, and a taxi takes about 10 minutes. Buy a ticket from the driver or the app, or use a ride-hailing app. Tartu Airport is a short taxi ride from the centre.

Step 5: sort the paperwork. Estonia is Schengen, so most Western passports enter visa-free for 90 days in any 180. Carry your passport, and an ID card if you are an EU citizen. If you need a Schengen visa, apply at an Estonian embassy or a consulate representing Estonia, well before your trip.

Estonia is small, so the arrival choice is really a choice about the whole trip. Pairing Tallinn with Riga is the classic route: two capitals, one bus, no flight. If you are coming from Finland, the ferry is part of the experience and often cheaper than flying.

Land borders with Latvia are straightforward at Ikla (on the Riga–Tallinn road) and at Valga, which is also a rail junction. The Russian border at Narva and Koidula is a different matter: crossings can be slow and rules change, so check the current status before you plan a route through Russia.

Winter changes the picture. Flights are rarely cancelled for snow, but ferries can be delayed by ice and buses run slower. Summer is the opposite problem: Tallinn accommodation and ferry seats sell out for weekends and for the Song Festival and other events, so book early.

Travel insurance is worth arranging before you fly, especially if you plan winter activities or ferry crossings.
