Airports in Estonia: which one to fly into

Estonia has one airport that matters for most visitors and a handful of small ones. Tallinn Airport (TLL) sits just outside the city, so you can be at your hotel within half an hour of landing. Everything else is a regional field: Tartu in the south, Kuressaare on Saaremaa, Kärdla on Hiiumaa, and Pärnu's small airfield, which handles very few scheduled flights.

The practical question is not which airport is nicest but which one saves you a transfer. If your trip is Tallinn plus a day trip, land at TLL. If you are heading straight to Tartu, Otepää or Võru, compare a flight to Tartu against a Tallinn landing plus a 2–2.5 h bus or train. For Saaremaa or Hiiumaa, a Tallinn–Kuressaare or Tallinn–Kärdla flight saves a ferry day in winter, but in summer the bus-and-ferry route is usually cheaper and more flexible.

From TLL, tram 4 runs into the centre, and Bolt or a taxi costs roughly €5–12 depending on destination and time of day. Allow 15–20 minutes to the Old Town area. Buses also stop at the terminal. There is no train station at the airport; the Elron rail hub is in central Tallinn, so if you are continuing to Tartu or Pärnu, take the tram or a Bolt to the station or to the bus terminal first.

Tartu Airport is small and mostly serves seasonal or connecting traffic; check the schedule before you build a trip around it. Kuressaare and Kärdla are served by small planes with few daily flights, so book early and keep a bus-and-ferry fallback. Pärnu's airport is not a reliable scheduled gateway — treat it as check.

For arrivals from the US, UK, Canada or Australia, there are no direct long-haul flights to Estonia. You connect through a European hub — Helsinki, Stockholm, Riga, Warsaw, Frankfurt, Amsterdam or London — and then take a short flight to Tallinn. Helsinki and Riga are the shortest hops and the most useful if you want to combine Estonia with Finland or Latvia.

Book the onward leg before you land. Tallinn–Tartu buses and trains sell out on Friday and Sunday evenings, and summer ferry car decks fill up weeks ahead.

If you are arriving late, sleep in Tallinn the first night rather than pushing straight to Tartu or the islands; the last connections leave in the evening.

Airport transfers are cheap by Western European standards, so a Bolt is often better value than a pre-booked private transfer for one or two people.

In winter, allow extra time: snow and darkness slow road transfers, and small island flights cancel more often than you would like.

Keep some euros in cash for the first taxi or bus if your card has issues, though cards work almost everywhere in Estonia.
