Erie is Pennsylvania's only Great Lakes port, a city of about 100,000 on Presque Isle Bay. The reason to come is Presque Isle State Park — 3,200 acres of sandy lake beaches and a 14-mile paved trail — plus a compact downtown of maritime and art museums. Two nights covers it; a third only if you add wineries or Waldameer with kids.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the grid is easy to read (numbered east–west streets, State and Peach as the main north–south routes) but sights are spread over 10 km. EMTA buses run Fairview–Harborcreek and south to the Peach Street shopping district; regional shuttles reach Edinboro, Waterford, Corry, Union City, Girard and Albion. Taxis are scarce — use Uber or Lyft, or pre-book.

Watch out

Safety

Erie is a normal mid-size US city: watch your car and belongings downtown after dark, and treat winter driving as the real hazard. Lake-effect squalls can white out I-90 in minutes.
  • Lake-effect snow can arrive in minutes from November to March: carry a blanket, shovel and phone charger if driving.
  • Eastbound Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited calls at Erie in the middle of the night; westbound is around 07:00.
  • Airport parking is limited and pricey — arrange a lift or taxi.
  • Presque Isle beaches have no lifeguards outside the summer season; check posted swim flags.
