El Portal

Sleep here for Yosemite Valley: 20 min drive to the valley floor, cheaper beds than inside the park. One night is enough; two if you want a full valley day.

El Portal is a small Merced River canyon community just outside Yosemite National Park's west boundary, built around lodging for park visitors. It sits on Highway 140, about 30 mi east of Mariposa, and the drive to Yosemite Valley takes roughly 20 minutes on a mostly flat road. There is almost no town centre: two large lodges with restaurants, a market, a post office and a stretch of river. Treat it as a bed base, not a destination.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

You need a car. Highway 140 is the only through road; there is no local bus. YARTS runs Highway 140 between Merced and Yosemite Valley with stops at the El Portal lodges, the post office and Barium Mine Road, mid-May to late September, and the fare includes park entry — useful for skipping valley parking in summer. The nearest Amtrak station is Merced, where you connect to YARTS.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: 20–30 min by car

Drive Highway 140 east, or take YARTS from the lodge stops

Go at opening; valley parking is full by mid-morning in summer.

Hite Cove Trail

go

Door to door: About 15 min

Drive Highway 140 to Savage's Trading Post, then walk in

Best Apr–May for wildflowers; the trail is exposed and closed in fire season.

Door to door: About 40 min

Drive Highway 140 west

Gold Rush museum, full grocery store and cheaper gas.

Fish Camp and the Mariposa Grove

caution

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Highway 140 west, then Highway 41 south

Long for a return day; better as a move to the south entrance.

Coulterville

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Highway 140 west, then Highway 49 south

Small historic gold town; pair it with Mariposa, not on its own.

Highway 140 at Yosemite View Lodge

Closest beds to the park boundary, on the Merced River; two restaurants, bar, convenience store, laundry.

Highway 140 at Cedar Lodge

About 2 mi west of Yosemite View; family rooms, indoor and outdoor pool, restaurant and lounge.

In-park alternatives

Yosemite Valley lodges and campgrounds are closer to the sights but book out months ahead and cost more.

Watch out

Safety

Low crime, high exposure: the real risks are heat, river currents, altitude and wildlife. Carry water, don't swim the Merced, store food in a car boot, and check road and fire status before driving.
  • Yosemite entry now needs a reservation in peak periods: check the NPS site before you drive.
  • Highway 140 closes during rockfalls and floods; check Caltrans QuickMap the morning you travel.
  • Cell signal is patchy in the canyon; download offline maps.
  • Gas and groceries are limited and priced for a park gateway: fill up in Mariposa.
  • Summer valley parking fills by mid-morning; go early or take YARTS.
