El Paso sits at the western tip of Texas, wedged between the Rio Grande and the Franklin Mountains, with Ciudad Juárez a bridge-walk away. It is a desert city of 680,000 where Spanish is everyday language, the food is Mexican-first, and the main sights — downtown museums, the Mission Trail, the mountain road — are spread out enough that a car or a rideshare saves hours. Getting around

A car or rideshare is the practical choice: downtown to the Mission Trail is about 20 min, downtown to Scenic Drive about 15 min. Sun Metro buses cover the city with a US$1.50 standard fare, and the free Sun Metro Streetcar loops 4.8 mi between UTEP and downtown, roughly 7:00–19:00 Mon–Thu, later Fri–Sat, noon–18:00 Sun. Taxis must usually be called.

Safety

El Paso is consistently one of the safer large US cities, and the main risks are heat, dehydration and the border crossing rather than street crime. Downtown is quiet late; use rideshare after dark and keep your passport secure if you cross.
  • Summer afternoons hit 38–40 °C: carry water, sunscreen and a hat; do the mountain road early.
  • The border crossing into Juárez needs a passport or passport card to return; wait times vary from minutes to over an hour.
  • Downtown is quiet after dark outside event nights; use rideshare rather than walking empty blocks.
  • Fort Bliss is an active base: no entry without a DoD ID or a visitor pass from the Buffalo Soldier or Chaffee gate.
