Where to stay in Ecuador: best areas and types of hotel

For a first trip, stay in Quito for 3 nights: La Mariscal or La Floresta if you want restaurants, cafés and tour pickups on your doorstep, Centro Histórico if you want to walk out into colonial streets. Both are around 2,850 m, so pick a hotel you can reach without a long climb and plan a light first day.

After Quito, the area follows the itinerary: Baños or Mindo for cloud forest and hot springs, Cuenca for a slower colonial city, Puerto López or Montañita for the coast, and Puerto Ayora or Puerto Baquerizo Moreno if you are doing the Galápagos independently rather than by cruise.

Solo and budget travellers do best in Quito's La Mariscal, Baños and Montañita, where dorm beds and cheap private rooms cluster near the bus terminals and tour offices. Hostels are common in all three; a private room with bathroom usually costs a little more than a dorm and is worth it at altitude.

Couples and mid-range travellers should look at La Floresta in Quito, a restored colonial house in Cuenca, or a cloud-forest lodge in Mindo. Families are easiest in Cuenca, Baños and the Galápagos towns, where rooms are larger and taxis are short and cheap; the altitude in Quito is the main thing to manage with children.

If you are on a Galápagos cruise, you sleep on the boat and only need one night in Quito or Guayaquil before and after the flight. Land-based Galápagos travel means basing in Puerto Ayora or Puerto Baquerizo Moreno and taking day boats.

Ecuador has no big low season for hotels the way Europe does; demand follows holidays and the Galápagos. December to January and the June to August school holidays are the busiest, and Galápagos rooms and boats sell out first. Carnival, Easter and local fiestas also fill the mainland cities for a few days.

The Andes dry season runs roughly June to September, which is also the most popular time for Quito, Cotopaxi and Cuenca. The coast is warm and wet from December to May and cooler and misty from June to November; whale watching off Puerto López peaks in the June to September window. The Amazon is wettest around June to August, though lodges operate year-round.

Ecuador uses the US dollar, so prices are easy to read. A hostel dorm in Quito or Baños is cheap; a mid-range double with hot water and Wi-Fi is still well under what the same room costs in the US or UK. Hot water can be a solar or electric shower head rather than a tank, so ask if that matters to you.

At the top end, restored colonial houses in Quito and Cuenca and country haciendas near Cotopaxi charge international boutique prices but include gardens, fireplaces and sometimes meals. In the Galápagos, the same money buys less: rooms are simpler and food and tours cost more because everything is shipped in.

Check what is included before booking: breakfast, airport pickup, tours and Galápagos park fees are often separate. Paying in cash can get a better rate outside the big cities, but confirm the total first.

Book Galápagos accommodation and any liveaboard or day boats as early as you can, especially for December to January and June to August. On the mainland, a few days ahead is usually enough outside holidays, and walk-in rates in Baños and Montañita can be lower in the quiet weeks.

Distances matter more than they look on a map: mountain roads are slow and landslides can close them, so a hotel near the bus terminal or airport saves a lot of time. Quito's airport is outside the city, and the ride to La Mariscal or the old town takes a while, so plan the arrival in daylight if you can.
