Best time to visit Ecuador: weather and seasons by month

Ecuador has four climate zones that do not move together, so a month that is wrong for the Andes can be right for the Galápagos. The table below gives the verdict, crowd level and price level for each month, plus the one thing that changes plans.

The Andes (Sierra) — Quito, Otavalo, Cotopaxi, Baños, Cuenca — is spring-like all year, with Quito around 10–22 °C. June to September is the driest and clearest stretch, which is when Cotopaxi and the avenue of volcanoes actually show themselves. In the wet months, March especially, mornings are often fine and rain arrives in the afternoon, so plan outdoor days early.

The Galápagos runs two seasons. December to May is the warm season: calm seas, clear water, short showers, best for snorkelling. June to November is the garúa season: cool mist, rougher and colder seas, but more marine life around the islands. August is the roughest crossing month; if you are prone to seasickness, that is the one to think about.

The Amazon (Oriente) — Coca, Tena, Cuyabeno, Yasuní — rains in every month, with March to July the wettest. Cuyabeno lagoons can run low in December to February, which limits some boat routes. The coast (Guayaquil, Montañita, Puerto López) is hot and wet January to April, then grey and cooler June to November, when humpback whales pass Puerto López. Ecuador's high season is roughly June to August and mid-December to early January, driven by northern-hemisphere holidays and the Galápagos cruise calendar. July and August are the tightest: Galápagos berths and Quito rooms sell out months ahead, and domestic flights to Baltra and San Cristóbal cost more.

The low season is April, May and October. April is cheap for a reason — it is the wettest month in the Andes and Amazon, with landslide risk on mountain roads. May and October are the better-value picks: mostly dry in the highlands, fewer people, lower prices. Galápagos cruises sometimes discount in September and October, when some boats dock for maintenance.

Carnival falls in February or March and moves with Lent, so check the date each year. It brings water, foam and paint fights, packed buses and full beach towns, plus Ambato's flower festival. Holy Week and Good Friday follow soon after and fill transport again, with Quito's purple-robed procession and fanesca soup on menus.

In June, Inti Raymi and San Juan around 21–29 June bring solstice festivals to Otavalo and Cotacachi, and rooms fill. Fiestas de Quito in early December and Christmas push Quito and Galápagos bookings up. Día de Difuntos on 2 November and Cuenca's independence on 3 November fill southern buses. Public holidays on 1 May, 24 May, 10 August and 9 October are lower impact but often move to a Friday or Monday, making long weekends.

Decide which zone matters most, then pick the month for that zone. If the Andes and volcano views are the point, aim for June to September. If the Galápagos is the point, aim for December to May, and book the cruise or the inter-island flights early. If you want both in one trip, May, September and October are the compromise months: mostly dry highlands and workable island conditions without peak prices.

Altitude is the other variable. Quito sits at about 2,850 m, so give the first day or two to acclimatise before heading higher. Finally, check the visa rules for your passport before booking anything non-refundable.
