Ecuador on a budget: daily costs and money-saving tips

Ecuador is one of the few countries where a US-dollar budget needs no conversion maths. The saving comes from how you move and where you eat, not from haggling. Set lunches (almuerzo: soup, a main, juice) at US$3–5 are the single biggest lever; two of those plus a hostel dorm keep a day near US$40. Buses between cities are cheap and frequent, so skipping domestic flights saves real money on the mainland.

Where costs jump is the Galápagos. Park fees of about US$200 for most foreign adults plus a US$20 transit card are paid on arrival in cash, and flights run US$200–500 return. A five-day mid-range cruise is US$2,000–4,000. If the islands are the point of the trip, budget them as a separate line, not as part of a daily rate.

Cards work in larger hotels and restaurants, but markets, buses and small towns run on cash. Carry small US bills: $50 and $100 notes are often refused. VAT (IVA) is 15% and restaurants add 10% service, so a menu price is not the final number.

Eat the menu del día at lunch, when kitchens are busiest and the price is lowest. Book dorm beds directly or on arrival in smaller towns, where walk-in rates can beat online ones. Overnight buses between major cities save a night's accommodation, though comfort varies.

Altitude is a cost too: Quito sits at about 2,850 m, so build in a slow first day rather than paying for tours you cannot enjoy. For the islands, compare a land-based stay on Santa Cruz or Isabela with a cruise; land-based diving and day boats often cost far less than a liveaboard.

Travel insurance is worth pricing before you cut other costs, especially if you plan diving or hiking. Check what your policy covers for altitude, boats and medical evacuation.
