The Eastern Province is Sri Lanka's dry-season coast: Trincomalee and Nilaveli in the north, Batticaloa in the middle, Arugam Bay in the south. It is Tamil- and Muslim-majority, drier and less built up than the south coast. It works when the south coast is wet, and it is quiet or shut when the south coast is at its best.

- Trincomalee to Arugam Bay is a long road day (roughly 5–7 h by bus, less by private car); do not plan it as a quick hop.
- There is no train linking Trincomalee and Batticaloa; the rail line from Colombo splits, it does not join.
- Beaches outside the main bays can have strong currents; ask locally before swimming.
- Some guesthouses and restaurants close or cut hours in the November–March off-season.

Peak east-coast months (July–August) are also the busiest; Arugam Bay beds fill around surf-season events.
