- India ↗Carry Indian rupees in small notes (10, 20, 50, 100); change for 500 is often refused.
- India ↗Parts of the Northeast, Sikkim, Ladakh, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and all border belts need a Protected or Restricted Area Permit or an Inner Line Permit for foreigners; check before you book the route.
Eastern India runs from the Bay of Bengal to the Himalayan foothills: four states — West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand and Sikkim — with Kolkata as the air and rail hub. Distances and slow roads matter more than queues, so pick one shape of trip: a coastal-and-delta run (Kolkata, Sundarbans, Odisha temples and Chilika), a hill run (Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Sikkim), or a plateau run (Jharkhand waterfalls and tribal markets). Two of the three is a full two weeks.
