The Eastern Desert (the Badiya) is Jordan's stony plateau east of Amman: Umayyad desert castles, the Azraq oasis and long empty roads. It is not a place you stay — you drive a loop from Amman or break the King's Highway run. Two or three castles plus Azraq fill a day; Qasr Amra's frescoes are the one thing worth a detour on their own.
