Eastend
Give Eastend one night: the T.rex Discovery Centre is the reason to come, and the town runs out of things to do by mid-afternoon.
Eastend is a town of about 500 people on the Frenchman River in southwest Saskatchewan, 385 km from Regina via the Trans-Canada Highway, Highway 37 and Highway 13. It exists on the traveller map because of one building: the T.rex Discovery Centre, home to Scotty, a Tyrannosaurus rex described as the largest and oldest yet found. Everything else — a small historical museum, a 9-hole golf course, a campground by the river — fits around that. One night is enough; two if you want to slow down and use it as a base for the Frenchman River valley and Grasslands country.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Watch out
Safety
- Distances are long and fuel stops are sparse: fill up in Gull Lake, Shaunavon or Maple Creek before heading out.
- Cell coverage is patchy in the valley and on the back roads; download offline maps.
- The T.rex Discovery Centre and the historical museum keep seasonal hours — check before you drive out.
- Winter driving on Highway 13 and 37 can close in blowing snow; check road conditions.
