East Gippsland is the long, thin eastern end of Victoria: lakes behind a sand barrier, a 90-mile beach, limestone caves inland and forest all the way to the New South Wales border. It is a driving region. Melbourne is about 3 h 30 to Bairnsdale by car, and V/Line trains stop at Bairnsdale — nothing further east. Sleep in Bairnsdale or Lakes Entrance for the lakes and the caves, in Orbost or Cann River as a break on the Princes Highway, and in Mallacoota only if the far east is the point of the trip.
