When to go
Summer (roughly June to August) is the straightforward window: midnight sun, open facilities and no convoy. Late August and September bring fewer people and darker skies, with a chance of northern lights once nights return.
Winter is possible but conditional. Between Skarsvåg and Nordkapp the road is open only via one daily convoy led by a snow plough, and it is cancelled in poor weather. This part of Norway has some of the coldest climates in the Northern Hemisphere, so treat the convoy as the plan, not a backup.

Olderfjord and the Alta side have limited beds, so most drivers either start early from Alta or break the trip in Honningsvåg. Book ahead in July, when the North Cape traffic peaks.
