The day trips in detail
Honeymoon Island is the closest real Gulf beach and the easiest win: cross the causeway, pay the state park fee at the gate, and you have dunes, a long sandy shore and a nature trail. In winter and spring the lot fills by mid-morning, so go early or go on a weekday. Caladesi Island, reachable by ferry or by walking the beach north from Clearwater, is the quieter version of the same coastline.
Tarpon Springs is the most distinctive half-day. The sponge docks along Dodecanese Boulevard are a working Greek-American district with bakeries, seafood counters and short boat trips out to the Anclote River and Gulf. It pairs well with a stop at Fred Howard Park on the way back.
St. Petersburg is the city day: the Dalí Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts and the waterfront parks around Straub Park, then lunch or dinner downtown. Tampa adds Busch Gardens, the Florida Aquarium and the historic Ybor City district, but traffic on I-275 makes it a longer, more tiring day.
If you want nature further out, Weeki Wachee Springs has swimmable spring water and a long-running mermaid show, and Myakka River State Park east of Sarasota is a big wetland with a canopy walkway and good birding. Both are full days once you account for the drive.

Practical tips
Start early. On the Gulf beaches the parking and the shade both run out by late morning in season, and afternoon thunderstorms are routine from June through September.
Check the state park website before you drive: Honeymoon Island and some other parks close sections or the whole gate when lots fill, and hours shift seasonally.
If you are relying on buses, build the day around one destination rather than two. A Dunedin–Clearwater–St. Petersburg combination by bus eats most of the day in transfers.
