Dunedin airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Dunedin sits on the Pinellas County coast, west of Tampa. Two airports serve it, and the trip into town is a road trip in every case — there is no rail option and no airport bus shuttle worth planning around.

The table below compares the realistic options. Prices are 2026 estimates for one person or a couple with normal luggage; a group of four splits a taxi four ways and usually comes out ahead of four bus fares plus the hassle.

Tampa International (TPA) is the big gateway: nonstop flights from most US hubs and a handful of international routes. It is about 35 km from Dunedin across Old Tampa Bay. Ride-hailing pickup is signposted on the arrivals level; follow the app's instructions rather than accepting a curb offer. Taxis wait at the same level and charge a metered or flat rate — ask before you get in.

St. Pete–Clearwater International (PIE) is smaller, closer and calmer, roughly 15 km from Dunedin. If a flight into PIE works for your dates, take it: you save 15–20 minutes and US$15–20 on the transfer. Allegiant and a few other carriers use it, so route choice is limited.

Rental cars are available at both airports, with the usual US caveats: the base rate excludes liability cover in many cases, and one-way drops add a fee. If you plan to see the beaches, Tarpon Springs or St. Petersburg, a car is the difference between a good trip and a lot of waiting. Parking in Dunedin's centre is free or cheap by US standards, though the marina and Honeymoon Island lots fill on weekends.

Buses exist — Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority runs the county network — but a TPA-to-Dunedin trip means getting downtown first and changing, which can take two hours with luggage. Treat it as a budget fallback, not a plan. Check current routes and times before relying on it.

Some Dunedin and Clearwater Beach hotels run their own shuttles or have a preferred car service. Ask when you book; it is the one option that can be free.

Expect US$45–70 from TPA and US$30–50 from PIE for a taxi or ride-hailing car in normal traffic (2026 estimates). Surge pricing after a delayed evening arrival can push the top of that range higher. Tipping a driver 15–20% is the US norm and is usually added in the app.

A rental car at US$45–110 a day looks expensive for one transfer, but it covers every other trip you make in Pinellas County. Add fuel, tolls on the causeways if you use them, and parking. For a couple staying three nights or more, the car is usually the cheaper total.

The bus is US$2–5 depending on how many zones and changes you need, but the time cost is real. A hotel shuttle, where it exists, is free to about US$40.
