Before you start
Welcome to the Downtown Dubai (Burj Khalifa & Dubai Mall) audio walk in Dubai. 3 stops: Burj Khalifa observation decks, Dubai Fountain and The Dubai Mall. Evening cluster: Burj Khalifa at a booked time, Dubai Mall in the hot hours, the fountain show after dusk; almost all of it is air-conditioned or shaded, but distances between parts are long.
The Burj Khalifa base, Burj Park, Dubai Opera, Souk Al Bahar and the Dubai Mall including the fountain promenade. Underfoot: mall floors, paved promenades; slope: flat; shade: low.
Dubai is a creek town that became a hub. The wooden boats on the water, the wind-tower houses in Bur Dubai and the 828-metre tower in Downtown belong to one story of trade, told over less than 200 years.
Before you start: Dress: cover shoulders and knees in the mall. Fountain show crowds are dense; keep valuables zipped. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.
1. Burj Khalifa observation decks
برج خليفة
Look for
- Exhibition and lift
- At the Top indoor deck
- Outdoor terrace
- Telescopes and photo points
- The Marina and coast from the west deck
Stop 1 of 3: Burj Khalifa observation decks. Arrival point: Enter through the Dubai Mall lower ground level; the metro station is a covered walk away.
Book a timed ticket on the official site for sunrise or late afternoon; allow 90 minutes door to door, arrive 20 minutes early through the mall, and skip it on a hazy day. On a first visit: The view that defines the city.
Look for Exhibition and lift: A short show, then a fast lift. Look for At the Top indoor deck: Glass-walled deck with a 360 degree view. Look for Outdoor terrace: Open in most weather (check). Look for Telescopes and photo points: Add-on options (check). For a photo: The Marina and coast from the west deck, late afternoon.
Dress covered in the mall: shoulders and knees. Sunset slots sell out; weekends and holidays are full; mornings are quieter. Allowed on the deck; no flash and no tripods.
Walk:Next, stop 2: Dubai Fountain. It's about 9 minutes on foot, about 200 metres to the south. Route: Walk to the fountain promenade. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
2. Dubai Fountain
نافورة دبي
Look for
- Promenade railing
- Souk Al Bahar bridge
- Second show
Stop 2 of 3: Dubai Fountain. Arrival point: Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall metro, then the covered link and the mall (about 15 min), or a car to the Souk Al Bahar side.
Watch one show after dusk from the promenade; it is free, lasts a few minutes and repeats about every 30 minutes in the evening, so you never need a front-row queue.
Look for Promenade railing: The main free view; go 10 minutes early. Look for Souk Al Bahar bridge: Slightly elevated view, less spray. Look for Second show: The crowd thins and the song changes.
Dubai began as a creek. The turn to trade came in 1901, when Sheikh Maktoum bin Hasher made Dubai a free port with low duties. Merchants from Persia and India moved across, and many of the coral-and-gypsum houses in Bur Dubai were built by families from that wave.
No drones, no tripods on the promenade. Busiest 19:00–21:00 and on weekends; the 13:00 show is a quiet trial run. Allowed; no tripods on the promenade.
Walk:Next, stop 3: The Dubai Mall. It's about 6 minutes on foot, about 550 metres to the north-east. Route: Walk into the mall. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
3. The Dubai Mall
دبي مول
Look for
- Aquarium viewing panel
- Fountain Food Court and terrace cafés
- Gold Souk section
Stop 3 of 3: The Dubai Mall. Arrival point: Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall metro station, then the covered link (about 15 min), or a car to the mall's valet/taxi bays.
Use it as the air-conditioned hub of Downtown: lunch, the aquarium window, a long rest in the heat and the walk to the fountain; it is huge, so pick one entrance and one goal.
Look for Aquarium viewing panel: The large tank window is free to look at from the walkway. Look for Fountain Food Court and terrace cafés: The best-value eating in the mall. Look for Gold Souk section: Compare weights and prices with the old Gold Souk.
The Burj Khalifa, The Dubai Mall and the Dubai Fountain are grouped around an artificial lake, and the walkways are air-conditioned or covered between the Metro station and the mall. The Dubai Mall and its fountain are the free part of the same district.
Cover shoulders and knees inside the mall. Quietest 10:00–12:00 on weekdays; crowded on weekends, holidays and after 17:00. Allowed for personal use; ask before photographing people.
