  1. Before you start

Welcome to the Corniche & Museum of Islamic Art audio walk in Doha. 3 stops: Museum of Islamic Art, Doha Corniche promenade and National Museum of Qatar. Morning cluster, October–April only: the museum from opening, then the Corniche and MIA Park; part of the box is water and the walk is fully in the sun.

Museum of Islamic Art, MIA Park and the nearby Corniche promenade; approximate box, includes waterfront. Underfoot: paved promenade and park paths; slope: flat; shade: low.

Doha grew from a small pearling town on the Gulf into the capital of one of the richest small states in the world in about two generations.

Before you start: Museum: no flash photography in galleries; follow signs. Corniche: do not photograph people or government buildings. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

  2. 1. Museum of Islamic Art

    متحف الفن الإسلامي

Stop 1 of 3: Museum of Islamic Art.

Go on a cooler morning from opening, 90 minutes inside, then lunch indoors; check the weekly closing day before you go.

The Museum of Islamic Art, opened in 2008, is the anchor.

No flash photography; follow gallery signs. Weekends (Fri–Sat) and school holidays are busiest; weekday mornings are calm. Shoulders and knees covered; no beachwear. Dress modestly: shoulders and knees covered. How long should I allow? About 90 minutes for the highlights, 2.5 hours if you like objects; add time for the café and park. Can I take photos? Usually yes without flash in the permanent galleries; special exhibitions may not allow it. Follow the signs. Shoes on.

Walk:Next, stop 2: Doha Corniche promenade. It's about 4 minutes on foot, about 900 metres to the west. Route: Walk out onto the Corniche. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  3. 2. Doha Corniche promenade

    كورنيش الدوحة

Stop 2 of 3: Doha Corniche promenade.

Walk it in the last hour before sunset from October to April, or before 09:00; in summer, skip it or ride past in a car.

Do not photograph government buildings or people without permission. Fridays and winter evenings are busy with families; weekday mornings are quiet. Shoulders and knees covered. No swimwear; no alcohol. When is the best time? The last hour before sunset from October to April, or before 09:00. Can I walk the whole Corniche? It is about 7 km; most visitors do 1–2 km near MIA and take a taxi for the rest.

Walk:Next, stop 3: National Museum of Qatar. It's about 10 minutes on foot, about 1.0 km to the east. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  4. 3. National Museum of Qatar

    متحف قطر الوطني

Stop 3 of 3: National Museum of Qatar.

Go on a hot or wet day for a full indoor half-day; check the weekly closing day, and book the day after MIA rather than the same morning.

The National Museum of Qatar, opened in 2019, is a different sort of building.

No flash photography where signs say so. Weekends and school holidays are busiest; weekday mornings are calm. How long do I need? About 2 hours for the main story; 3 with the café and the palace courtyard. Is it worth it on a short visit? Yes on a hot day or if you like architecture; skip it if you have already spent the morning at the Museum of Islamic Art.
