Dinas Dinlle
Go for one night or a half-day: a Blue Flag beach, an eroded Iron Age fort on the headland and a chippy. Skip as a base unless you have a car.
Dinas Dinlle is a small coastal village in Gwynedd, about 11 km south-west of Caernarfon on the A499, with a sand-and-stone beach in Caernarfon Bay and a sea-eroded Iron Age fort on the low cliff behind it. There is one hotel, a chippy, caravan parks and holiday cottages; everything else — food, shops, transport — is in Caernarfon. Come for the beach and the fort, then move on.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- The fort ramparts are eroded and unfenced: stay back from the cliff edge, especially with children and dogs.
- The beach is sand and stone with no lifeguard outside the main season: check tide times before swimming.
- Bus 91 serves the village but the timetable has changed in recent years — check before relying on it.
- Most food, cash machines and shops are in Caernarfon, not here: stock up first.
A quiet, low-crime village; the real risks are the unfenced, eroding fort cliff, cold water with no lifeguard outside the season, and narrow lanes with no pavement where people walk to the beach.
