Give Devon half a day, not a night: the botanic garden and the oil museum are 5–10 min apart by car, and Edmonton is 40 km away.
Devon is a small town on the south bank of the North Saskatchewan River, 40 km southwest of downtown Edmonton and about 20 minutes from Edmonton International Airport. It exists because of oil: the Imperial Leduc #1 well struck oil nearby in 1947 and the town was built for the workers. Today the draw is two sites on Highway 60 — the University of Alberta Botanical Gardens and the Canadian Energy Museum — plus a river-valley campground. There is no rail or bus link, so you need a car.

Get around
The town itself is small enough to walk, but the gardens, the museum and the ski hill all sit on or off Highway 60 outside town, so a car is the practical way to move between them. There is no local bus and no rail link. Parking at both main sites is free.

Scams and watch-outs
- No train or intercity bus serves Devon: without a car you are dependent on taxis and rideshares from the airport.
- The gardens are seasonal — roughly late June to early October — and close entirely outside that window; check dates before you drive out.
- Winter driving on Highway 60 and Highway 19 is the real hazard: snow, ice and drifting between December and March.
- Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy in the river valley and on the back roads north of Highway 60.
Devon is a quiet small town and violent crime is rare. The real risks are winter driving on Highway 60 and Highway 19, ice on river-valley paths, and wildlife on the back roads at dawn and dusk.
