Layover in Delhi: what to do

Yes, if you have the right to enter India. Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) is about 15–20 km from the centre, and the round trip plus the 2-hour pre-flight buffer eats most of a short layover. Treat 6 hours as the floor for stepping outside the terminal at all, and 10 hours or more as the point where one city sight becomes realistic (check).

The clock starts when you land and ends when you must be back at the terminal. Add immigration on arrival (30–60 min at peak times), baggage claim if your bags are not checked through, the trip in (45–90 min by car, about 25 min by Airport Express metro to New Delhi station), the same trip back, and security plus check-in for your onward flight (arrive 2 hours before an international departure).

If your layover is under 6 hours, or your onward flight is domestic and you must re-clear security, staying airside is the safer call. T3 has lounges and food courts; a hotel near the airport is the lowest-risk way to rest without committing to the city run (check hotel options and shuttle arrangements before booking).

India does not run a general transit-without-visa scheme for airside-to-landside transfers. To leave the airport you must be admitted as a visitor — which means a valid visa, an e-visa, or a nationality that has visa-free entry. Check your own case on the official Indian government e-visa portal before you fly; rules and eligible nationalities change.

If you are only transiting airside and not passing immigration, you normally do not need a visa — but confirm with your airline, because some carriers require a transit visa for the connection. If you hold an onward ticket and stay in the international transit area, you generally remain airside.

If your bags are checked through to your final destination, you do not need to collect them — you can leave the airport with just a day bag. If Delhi is a stopover and you must reclaim your bags, ask at the terminal information desk whether left-luggage or a cloakroom is operating, where it is, its hours and its per-bag, per-day fee (check — availability and rates are not confirmed here).

Airport left-luggage desks, where they exist, are the safer option than carrying everything into the city. Some airport-area hotels hold bags for guests; ask before you rely on it (check). Do not leave bags unattended anywhere in the terminal or the city.

The Airport Express metro is usually the fastest reliable option: about 25 minutes from DEL to New Delhi station, running roughly every 10–15 minutes. From New Delhi station you can pick up the Delhi Metro or a taxi. The metro is cheap and avoids traffic, but it stops running late at night — check the last train if your layover is overnight (check).

Taxis and app cabs (Uber, Ola) take 45–90 minutes depending on traffic, which in Delhi can be heavy at almost any hour. Prepaid taxi counters inside the terminal and app pickups are the safest; ignore touts offering rides in the arrivals hall. Fares for the 15–20 km run are typically in the ₹500–900 range for an app cab or prepaid taxi, more for a larger vehicle (2026 estimate, check).

Allow the same time back, plus a buffer. For an international departure, be at the terminal 2 hours before the flight; for a domestic connection, 2 hours as well because security queues at DEL run long.

Six hours is not enough for the city: after immigration, the round trip and the 2-hour pre-flight buffer, you would have almost no usable time. Stay airside or take a hotel near the airport. Twelve hours is the first window where one city stop is arguable — Qutub Minar or Humayun's Tomb sit on the airport side of town, but confirm opening hours, entry rules and the drive time before committing (check). Twenty-four hours opens up the classic Delhi day: Old Delhi and Chandni Chowk, the Red Fort area, India Gate and a proper meal, with a hotel night in between.

Delhi's monuments run sunrise to sunset, and the Taj Mahal in Agra is closed on Fridays — but Agra is a 3.5–4 hour drive each way, so it is not a layover trip. Many museums close on Mondays. Chandni Chowk market closes on Sundays. Build your plan around these closures.
