Cuba in March: what to expect

March sits at the end of Cuba's dry season. On the west — Havana, Viñales, Varadero — expect warm days around 27 °C and nights near 20 °C, with long sunny spells and little rain. The centre and south coast (Trinidad, Cienfuegos, Santa Clara) run slightly warmer. Oriente, including Santiago de Cuba and Baracoa, is hotter and wetter year-round, and Baracoa can see rain in any month.

Sea temperatures are comfortable for swimming on both the north and south coasts, which makes March a strong beach month for Varadero, the Cayos and the beaches near Trinidad. Humidity is lower than in summer, so walking cities in the middle of the day is manageable.

One caveat for 2026: heat matters less than whether the power is on. Blackouts and fuel shortages mean fans and air conditioning may not run, so a hot afternoon feels worse than the numbers suggest.

March is still high season. European and Canadian winter visitors overlap with spring-break travellers, so Havana's old-town casas, Trinidad's guesthouses and Varadero's resorts fill up, and the best rooms go weeks ahead. Prices are at their annual high alongside January, February and December.

Book accommodation and any long-distance transport before you fly, and expect the classic squeeze: a casa particular in Havana or Trinidad that costs little in May can cost noticeably more in March. If your dates are flexible, April brings similar weather with fewer people and softer prices.

Cuba's fixed public holidays in March are limited. Good Friday is a public holiday and falls in late March or early April depending on the year — in years when Easter is early, it lands in March and brings a short domestic travel spike. Confirm the date for your year before planning around it.

Beyond the calendar, March is a normal working month in Havana: concerts, theatre and gallery openings continue, and the city's cultural institutions run their usual programmes. Specific festivals and one-off events change year to year, so check listings close to your dates rather than booking around a named event.

With dry weather across most of the island, March suits a classic west-and-centre route. Give Havana four nights for the old town, Malecón and museums, add two or three in Viñales for the valley and tobacco farms, then three in Trinidad for the colonial streets and the nearby beach at Playa Ancón. Cienfuegos and Santa Clara fit between Havana and Trinidad as one-night stops.

If you want heat and a different Cuba, fly or drive east to Santiago de Cuba and Baracoa. Note that the east took the worst of Hurricane Melissa in October 2025, so check current conditions and services in Baracoa before committing. Beach-first travellers should base in Varadero or the cayos, where March sea conditions are usually good.

Pack for warm days and slightly cooler evenings: light cotton clothing, a hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen. Add a light long-sleeve layer for air-conditioned buses, early mornings in Viñales and the occasional cool front that can reach western Cuba in the first half of March.

Because of the 2026 power and fuel situation, bring a power bank, a small torch or headlamp, and any medication you need in full, in original packaging. Carry enough cash for the whole trip — euros, US dollars or Canadian dollars in good condition — plus a printed copy of your travel insurance and onward flight details. A reusable water bottle and oral rehydration sachets are worth the space.

February is drier and just as busy, with the Havana Book Fair in some years. April keeps the dry weather with fewer visitors and lower prices, and is the better pick if you can move your dates. May starts the rains and the heat, and the crowds thin out further. January is the coolest and driest of the winter months, and the busiest.
