Crete is 260 km long and 60 km wide, with one main highway along the north coast and slow mountain roads south. Crossing the island west to east takes 4–5 hours by car, so a week split between two bases beats a week of driving. Chania and the west hold the Venetian harbour, Balos and Samaria; Heraklion holds Knossos and the Minoan museum; Lasithi and the south-east are the quiet end of the island.

North coast (Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion): Swimming roughly May to October; July–August afternoons reach the mid-30s °C. Meltemi wind can make the north coast choppy.
South coast and Messara plain: Warmer and drier than the north; the south coast is the first to be swimmable in spring.

The island sees about 60 rain days a year, most between November and March. The west is greener and wetter than the east.
