What things cost
Most food is imported from New Zealand, so supermarket baskets run above Auckland prices and restaurant meals follow. Eating from the market, a bakery or your own kitchen is the single biggest lever on your daily spend.

Build your budget in five steps
- Pick your island mix. Rarotonga is the cheapest base; Aitutaki beds and food cost more, and the domestic flight is a separate line.
- Book the bed first. Accommodation is 40–60% of a mid-range day, and beachfront studios sell out for the June–August dry season.
- Decide self-catering or restaurants. A studio with a kitchen can cut food from NZ$70–100 to NZ$35–50 a day.
- Choose one paid activity a day, not three. Lagoon cruise, dive and island night each cost more than a day of food.
- Add cash for the outer islands. Cards work at resorts and larger Rarotonga shops, but markets, roadside stalls and the outer islands run on cash.
Notes and traps
The daily figures exclude international flights and the Rarotonga–Aitutaki hop. An Aitutaki day tour from Rarotonga, with flights, runs NZ$600+ per person, which is often more than staying over for two nights.
Cook Islands coins and notes are legal tender alongside NZD but are not exchangeable outside the country, so spend them before you fly out. Tipping and bargaining are not customary; the price is the price.
Outer islands beyond Aitutaki are reached by rare flights or cargo ships, so a delay can add an unplanned night. Keep a buffer of one day's budget for that.
