Step by step: how to choose
Step 1 — Decide your total days. Under 8 days, stay on Rarotonga and take one day trip; the domestic flight to Aitutaki plus transfers eats most of a day each way. With 8–10 days, do Rarotonga then Aitutaki. With 12+ days, add one outer island.
Step 2 — Pick a base on Rarotonga. Muri for the lagoon, motu and water sports; Arorangi on the west coast for sunsets and older church sites; Avarua for the market, harbour, museum and shops. The island is small, so any base is within a short bus or scooter ride of the rest.
Step 3 — Book the Aitutaki flight early. Seats on the small aircraft are limited and the schedule is thin; book the domestic leg before you lock in international dates, and keep the last night on Rarotonga.
Step 4 — Add an outer island only if the flight works. Atiu has caves, birds and tumunu; Mangaia has makatea cliffs and quiet; Mitiaro is the smallest and flattest of the group. Flights run a few times a week and can be cancelled, so treat these as flexible add-ons (check).
Step 5 — Match the season. May–October is drier and cooler, which suits walking, lagoon days and inter-island flights. November–April is hotter, wetter and cyclone season; if you travel then, keep plans loose and check the forecast (check).

Rarotonga is the transport hub: international flights land there, and every domestic route starts there. Build the trip as a loop rather than a one-way chain.
Distances are short but slow. The round-island bus circles Rarotonga in about an hour; a scooter is faster but needs a local licence, arranged on the island (check).
Cash and cards: cards are widely accepted in Rarotonga and Aitutaki, but outer islands run on cash and limited ATMs. Carry enough for the days you are off the main islands (check).
Swim in the middle of the lagoon at high tide and stay away from reef passages, where currents run out. This applies at Muri, Titikaveka and Aitutaki alike.
