Spain vs Portugal: which should you visit?

Spain wins on scale: Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Granada, Valencia and the islands, linked by fast trains. It also costs more and needs more planning if you want to see several regions in one trip.

Portugal wins on ease: Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve sit within a few hours of each other, prices are lower, and a week feels complete rather than rushed. If this is your first trip to Europe and you want a gentle pace, Portugal is the safer pick. If you want world-class museums, Andalusian cities and the option of islands, Spain delivers more.

Both countries use the euro, share the 112 emergency number and run on the same plugs, so the practical differences are cost, distance and what you actually see. Spain is roughly five times the size of Portugal, which is why a 10-day Spain trip usually means two or three bases and a train between them, while a 10-day Portugal trip can cover the whole country without a flight.

Choose Spain if you have 10 days or more and want variety: a big-city start in Madrid or Barcelona, then a high-speed train south to Andalusia for Seville, Córdoba and Granada. The rail network makes this realistic without a car.

Spain also suits travellers who want islands or year-round warmth: the Canary Islands stay mild in winter, and Mallorca works as a standalone week. If you are chasing art, architecture and late dinners, Spain has more of it. Budget for higher prices in Barcelona, San Sebastián and the Balearics in summer.

Choose Portugal if you want a first trip that fits in a week without rushing. Lisbon, Sintra, Porto and the Algarve connect by train or a short drive, and daily costs run lower than Spain's for food, stays and transport.

Portugal also suits travellers who prefer a slower rhythm: tiled streets, seafood, port wine cellars and surf towns within an hour of each other. If your priority is value and a compact route rather than a long list of famous sights, Portugal is the easier introduction.

Doing both in one trip works if you have at least two weeks and accept one long transfer. The usual route is Madrid or Barcelona to Lisbon, then Porto, or the reverse. Madrid–Lisbon is about 10 hours by train with a change, or roughly 1h15 by plane, so most travellers fly that leg rather than lose a day.

A practical split: 6–7 nights in Spain (Madrid plus one Andalusian city), then 5–6 nights in Portugal (Lisbon plus Porto or the Algarve). Book the cross-border flight early in summer, when prices rise. If you only have a week, pick one country and skip the transfer.
