Colombo is a morning-and-evening city: do Beira Lake and Pettah before 10:30, hide from the heat at midday, walk the seafront after 16:30 — and leave a wide margin for the airport, which is far and the road is slow.
The honest verdict
Colombo is hot, humid and spread along one coast road. Its sights are close as the crow flies, but pavements are narrow or missing and the traffic peaks twice a day. The trips that go wrong are the ones that walk at noon, drag suitcases through Pettah, or leave for Katunayake with less than a three-hour margin. Four clusters cover a first visit; most travellers use Colombo as the first or last night of a longer island trip.

Three mistakes to avoid
- 'The temple is closed today' from a stranger who then offers a tour or a shop: temples run their own hours; walk to the gate and check yourself.(Scams)
- Temples: shoulders and knees covered, shoes and hats off before the grounds; never pose with your back to a Buddha statue.(Survive · red lines)
