Albania's coast runs about 476 km from the Adriatic to the Ionian, and the three stretches are not interchangeable. The northern beaches near Velipoja and Shëngjin are wide, sandy and calm, and they fill with Kosovo and North Macedonia plates in August. The central coast around Durrës and Golem is the closest beach to Tirana, busy and convenient rather than clear. South of Vlorë the water turns Ionian and the coves get rocky and blue — that is the Albanian Riviera, and it is a separate page. Sleep in one base per stretch; the drives between them are long and the summer traffic is real.

August is the peak: Velipoja, Golem and Durrës beaches are crowded and beds cost the most. Book ahead or come in June or September.
The SH4 between Durrës and Kavajë is dual carriageway and crowded in summer — drive carefully.
Water quality is not uniform: the southern Ionian beaches (Vlorë southward, Dhërmi, Qeparo, Sarandë) are cleaner than Golem and the central sand.
