Chubu is Japan's middle: the Japan Alps, Mount Fuji's north side, the Hokuriku coast and Nagoya's industrial belt, spread across nine prefectures. Trains run along the edges (Tokaido Shinkansen south, Hokuriku Shinkansen north), but the mountains in between are slow by rail. Pick one or two bases and accept that a car or a long bus ride is part of the trip.

  • Chubu's mountains are the point and the problem: rail lines loop around them, so Takayama–Kanazawa, Matsumoto–Takayama and the Noto Peninsula are bus or car journeys.
  • Some national routes in the Alps are narrow and closed by snow in winter; snow tires or chains are required on mountain roads from roughly December to March.
  • Mount Fuji climbing season is short (roughly July to early September); outside it the trails are closed and huts shut.

Bags between cities

Luggage forwarding (takuhaibin) between Nagoya, Takayama and Kanazawa is usually next-day; the receiving hotel must accept it. Mountain guesthouses often cannot.
