3 days in Christchurch: itinerary

Christchurch rewards a slow first day and two full days out of town. The centre is compact and flat, rebuilt after the earthquakes, with the Avon River, the Botanic Gardens and the arts precinct close together. Give it one unhurried day, then use the other two for the peninsula and the mountains.

If you have only three days, do not try to add Queenstown or the glaciers. Both are long drives and belong to a longer South Island route.

Most of what you will do in the centre is free and open all day: the Botanic Gardens, the riverbank walk and the street art. Indoor sights keep normal daytime hours, and some close one day a week — check before you go.

Day trips are the main cost. A rental car for two days plus fuel is often cheaper than two separate tours for a group, while a solo traveller may prefer a tour. Book alpine and harbour trips ahead in summer.

Christchurch airport is about 20–30 minutes from the centre by car or bus; check current fares and timetables. The city is flat and easy on foot, with buses for longer hops.

For day trips, a car gives the most freedom. Akaroa is roughly 1.5 hours by road over the hills, Arthur's Pass about 2 hours, and Lyttelton about 20 minutes. Winter can bring snow and ice on the alpine roads, so check conditions before setting out.

Book cars and tours early for December–February, the busiest window. March is calmer and still warm. Carry a layer and a rain jacket any month; the weather changes quickly.
