China in October: what to expect

October is the transition month: the summer monsoon is over, the winter chill has not arrived, and the haze that sits over the north in late winter and spring has not yet built. The parent country data rates October as a best month in every zone except the far south, where it is the start of the dry season.

Expect wide differences by region. Beijing and the north run roughly 8–20 °C with crisp, blue days. Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Nanjing sit around 15–24 °C. Guangzhou, Guilin and Xiamen are still warm at 22–30 °C. Chengdu stays grey and humid, while Kunming, Dali and Lijiang are mild and dry. On the Tibetan plateau, days are sunny but nights drop below freezing, and the altitude is the bigger issue than the temperature.

Rain is limited. The plum rain ended in July, and the typhoon window on the coast (roughly July–September) is closing, though a late storm is possible in the first half of the month — check forecasts if you are heading to Shanghai or Hainan.

The month splits in two. From 1 to 7 October, National Day Golden Week sends hundreds of millions of domestic travellers onto trains, planes and highways. Tickets for the Beijing–Shanghai high-speed line, flights into Lijiang or Sanya, and hotels near major sights can sell out weeks ahead, and prices jump. The parent country data flags this week as the one to avoid.

From 8 October onward the same weather continues with far less pressure. Weekdays are comfortable; weekends at big sights such as the Forbidden City or the Bund are busy but manageable. Late October is one of the quietest good-weather windows of the year before the November lull.

Book high-speed rail seats as soon as your dates are fixed — sales usually open about two weeks before departure, and Golden Week seats go in minutes. Hotels are easiest to book with free cancellation well in advance.

The fixed event of the month is National Day on 1 October, which opens Golden Week: flag-raising ceremonies in Beijing, fireworks and light shows in many cities, and a week of domestic holidays. It is spectacular but the worst week of the month for moving around.

Mid-Autumn Festival falls in late September or early October depending on the lunar calendar, so in some years it overlaps the start of October — check the date for your year. It is a family holiday with mooncakes, lantern displays and another travel surge.

Beyond the public holidays, October is harvest and foliage season: red leaves in the Beijing hills and around Huangshan, chrysanthemum displays in Kaifeng, and the start of the dry, clear season for Silk Road sites such as Dunhuang.

Almost everywhere works, so pick by interest rather than weather. For a first trip, Beijing plus Shanghai by high-speed rail is the standard route, and October is the best month for both: clear skies in Beijing, mild days on the Bund.

For colour and landscape, head to Huangshan or the Beijing hills for autumn foliage, or to Guilin and Yangshuo as the dry season begins. Yunnan — Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-La — is mild and sunny, and October is one of its best months. The Silk Road (Dunhuang, Turpan, Zhangye) is comfortable after the desert summer, and the Tibetan plateau is clear, though nights are cold and permits can be restricted — check before booking.

If you want warmth, Hainan and the far south are still beach-friendly. If you want fewer people, choose the northeast or the northwest, where October is rated a best month but domestic demand is lower than the coast.

Pack for a 10–15 °C swing between day and night, and for regional differences. Layers are the answer: a T-shirt or light long-sleeve by day, a mid-layer and a light jacket or windbreaker for evenings, especially in the north and on the plateau.

Add sun protection — the plateau sun is strong even when the air is cold — plus comfortable walking shoes for long sightseeing days, a power bank, and a universal adapter (China uses type A/C/I sockets at 220 V). If you are travelling during Golden Week, keep tickets and hotel confirmations on your phone and offline, since mobile data can be slow at busy stations.

September is nearly as good, with the heat easing and lower prices before the National Day rush — the main risk is the tail of the typhoon season on the coast. November is cooler and quieter, with low prices and clear northern skies, though the north starts to feel like winter and Harbin's ice season does not open until late December.

If you can only travel in the first week of October, expect Golden Week conditions and book everything early. If you can shift to mid-October, you get the same weather with a fraction of the crowds.
