Best places to visit in China: top cities, regions and sights
For a first trip, go to Beijing (4–5 nights) plus Shanghai (3–4 nights), adding Xi'an if you have 10 days. Chengdu, Guilin/Yangshuo, Hangzhou/Suzhou and Yunnan reward a second trip. Skip the long diagonals unless you fly them; rail links the main stops.

Summary table: where, how long, when
Nights are the minimum that does the place justice. Months are the best window, not the only workable one. Prices are a 2026 estimate for one mid-range double room per night in the area named.

How to choose, step by step
Step 1: fix your entry and exit first. Beijing and Shanghai have the most international flights; Hong Kong works as a separate-entry start or finish. Your entry point decides the shape of the trip more than any sight does.
Step 2: pick one region, not the whole map. A first trip is Beijing plus Shanghai, or Beijing plus Xi'an plus Shanghai. Ten days is the realistic minimum for three stops with travel days.
Step 3: check the rail legs. High-speed trains link Beijing, Xi'an, Chengdu, Guilin, Shanghai and Guangzhou; the long diagonals (Beijing–Guilin, Shanghai–Chengdu) are faster by plane. Book seats as soon as your dates are fixed, especially around holidays.
Step 4: match the season. April–May and September–October suit most of the country. Yunnan is best October–May; Harbin's ice festival is a winter trip; the south is hot and wet in summer.
Step 5: add a second-tier stop only if it earns its travel day. Pingyao, Datong, Kaifeng, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Qufu are short hops from the main line and repay a night or two.
- First trip, 7 days: Beijing 4 + Shanghai 3.
- First trip, 10 days: Beijing 4 + Xi'an 2 + Shanghai 3.
- Second trip, 14 days: add Chengdu 3 and Guilin/Yangshuo 2–3.
- Slow trip: Yunnan 4–5 nights, or Zhangjiajie 2 nights from a Chengdu or Shanghai base.
Notes before you book
Holidays change everything. Lunar New Year and the National Day week (1–7 October) fill trains, hotels and the main sights; prices rise and some smaller businesses close. Book weeks ahead or travel outside those windows.
Tibet is not independent travel. Lhasa and central Tibet need a permit arranged through an organised tour, and the paperwork takes time; plan it as its own trip, not a side stop.
Hong Kong is a separate entry. Do not assume a mainland visa covers it, or the reverse; check the rules for your passport before you build an open-jaw route.
Payments and connectivity are the practical blockers. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay and a working eSIM or roaming plan before you fly, since neither can be fixed easily at the airport. Carry some cash for small vendors.
Altitude matters in Yunnan, Tibet and parts of Sichuan. Give Lhasa and Shangri-La a slow first day and do not stack them straight after a long flight.
FAQ
Questions people ask
What are the best places to visit in China?
Beijing for imperial sights and the Great Wall, Shanghai for the Bund and lane houses, Xi'an for the Terracotta Army, Chengdu for pandas and Sichuan food, and Guilin/Yangshuo for karst scenery. Yunnan, Hangzhou/Suzhou and Zhangjiajie are strong second-trip additions.
How many days do you need in China?
Seven days covers Beijing and Shanghai. Ten days adds Xi'an. Fourteen days allows Beijing, Xi'an, Chengdu, Guilin/Yangshuo and Shanghai. Under a week, stay in one city and take day trips rather than crossing the country.
Which areas of China suit a first visit?
The Beijing–Shanghai corridor, with Xi'an in between, because high-speed rail links them, English signage is common and the main sights are concentrated. Save Yunnan, Tibet, Xinjiang and the northeast for a second trip.
Is high-speed rail better than flying in China?
On the main corridors, yes: city-centre to city-centre, no long airport transfers, and Beijing–Shanghai takes about 4.5–6 hours. Fly the long diagonals, such as Beijing–Guilin or Shanghai–Chengdu, where rail eats a full day.
When is the best time to visit China?
April–May and September–October suit most of the country, with mild temperatures and less rain. Avoid the National Day week in early October and Lunar New Year unless you book far ahead. Yunnan is best October–May.
Can I visit Tibet as an independent traveller?
No. Foreign visitors need a Tibet Travel Permit arranged through a licensed tour operator, plus an organised itinerary. Allow extra weeks for paperwork and check current rules before booking flights to Lhasa.
